The Blue Lagoon Hiking Trail

Situated in the Mount Anderson Catchment and Nature Reserve; the trail starts at Riverbed Africa and provides hikers with marvellous views of the Spekboom River.

The trail offers very challenging hikes and climbs alongside the 2,2 river-side amble.

The trial carries rare and endangered wildlife like the oribi and the area is well-known for its unique vegetation

It becomes obvious why so many hikers are at awe at the spectacular potholes and describe this as the perfect hiking destination.

@ Mount Anderson Catchment Reserve

Situated within the Mount Anderson Catchment and Nature Reserve, we offer two primary hiking experiences: the challenging Blougat Trail and the rugged River-Side Amble.

Getting Started

Guests at Riverbed Africa Guesthouse & Garden Bungalow:

  • From the Guesthouse: Simply step into the Aloe Garden and follow the signage.
  • From the Garden Bungalow: Follow the signage located next to the patio.

Guests at the Glamping Tents or Cabin:

  • For the River-Side Amble: Cross the river directly from your accommodation.
  • For the Blougat Trail: Walk back to the 90-degree bend in the road and look for the sign marked "Blougat".

The Experience

The reserve is home to rare and endangered wildlife, such as the oribi, and is renowned for its unique indigenous vegetation. Whether you choose the mountain climb or the river route, you will soon see why hikers stand in awe of spectacular sights like Murray's Pools, the Potholes, and Blougat, considering this a premier hiking destination.

Choose Your Hike

1. The River-side Amble (Rugged) Distance 4.4 km Total (2.2 km each way)

Don't let the name fool youโ€”this is a rugged, scenic route that winds through thick vegetation along the banks of the Spekboom River. It is an adventurous trail that requires navigating the river by crossing it three times. The trail ends at a set of breathtaking water pools, right where the Small Spekboom River flows into the main Spekboom River.

2. The Blougat Trail (Challenging) Distance: 5.8 km Total (2.9 km each way)

The opposite of a gentle stroll, this is a physically demanding route designed for true adventure seekers. The trail winds through dense vegetation and spectacular landscapes. It takes hikers past a historic water weir and a canal that runs through the mountains, finally ending at the beautiful Blougat. It is a thrilling and rewarding experience.
